Support Capacity of Paraty’s Conservation Units (State of Rio de Janeiro)

In 2011, with the objective of performing a study to determine the support capacity, sustainability indicators, and elaborating actions proposals for the region of Trindade and areas comprised within Cairuçu Environmental Protection Area, Brazilian National Park of Serra da Bocaina and Juatinga Ecological Reserve, at the City of Paraty (State of Rio de Janeiro), SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation set up a technical team comprised of IBIO’s and EcoBrasil Institute’s employees.

IBIO’s direct performance scope involved the development of a georeference information system (GIS) to aid in the management of tourism in the several protected areas of the municipality. The activities were always carried out in a partnership with the managers of the conservation units (CUs) and other parties interested in the territory.

These were the main actions:

  • Definition of attributes;
  • Primary and secondary information collection;
  • Structuring of GeoDataBase;
  • High resolution images preparation;
  • Delivery of the project and training in GIS of the CUs’ managers.
